What is Macular Degeneration?
Macular degeneration, also known as Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), is the leading cause of blindness in people over the age of fifty. There are two stages of macular degeneration: the dry stage which accounts for 90% is the less vision threatening form and the wet stage which accounts for 10% of cases can lead to significant vision loss.
Am I at Risk for Macular Degeneration?
Risk factors for macular degeneration include: age, positive family history, cigarette smoking, Caucasian descent, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, and female gender.
What Can I Do To Prevent Macular Degeneration?
To prevent macular degeneration follow these simple steps: quit smoking, always wear ultraviolet protection, exercise, and eat a healthy diet rich in lutein and zeaxanthin which can be found in leafy green vegetables such as spinach and kale.
The most important preventative tool is to get your eyes examined by our skilled optometrists. At Associates in Family Eyecare we have the latest technology to screen for and treat macular degeneration; we sell eye vitamins as management for AMD as well.
Eye Vitamins for Macular Degeneration
The recommended treatment for macular degeneration are eye vitamins. We offer two products for macular health: Numaqula Omega-3 and Numaqula Vitamin (AREDS2 Formula).

Our doctors will prescribe the eye vitamin that is best for your eye health. Never take any supplements without speaking with your optometrist first.
Macular Degeneration Advanced Technology Testing
AdaptDx: The AdaptDx test helps us detect AMD in its earliest stages, long before you may notice any changes in your vision by measuring your dark adaptation. If you are diagnosed with AMD, scheduled monitoring with the AdaptDx provides the best chance to manage the condition and preserve your vision. We are the only office between Indiana and Harrisburg to offer this test. Watch the videos below to learn more.
Optomap Retinal Scan: This takes a photo of your retina to screen for and manage macular degeneration.
Optical Coherence Tomopgraphy (OCT): This non-invasive test is used to screen for and manage macular degeneration by taking a cross section of the retina.
Diopsys Electroretinography (ERG): This test provides objective, functional information about the performance of the inner retinal cells of the eye.
